Welcome to Christ Lutheran Church!
All God’s children are welcome, wherever they are from, whatever their age, the color of their skin, the contents of their wallet, no matter whom they love, how they speak, and whatever their abilities or disabilities; for all are one, reconciled to God in Christ Jesus.
We are an ELCA congregation located at 299 Haywood Lane in Nashville, Tennessee. Christ Lutheran Church celebrated 50 years of ministry in Nashville in 2011!
Christ Lutheran Church is an ethnically and ecumenically diverse community. Christ Lutheran sponsors Christ Kiswahili Lutheran Mission, a Synodically Authorized Worshiping Community of the ELCA that grew as an outreach ministry of Christ Lutheran Church. Ecumenical mission congregations – Iglesia de San Matias, an Anglican congregation and Nashville Korean Evangelical Church – also house their ministry at Christ. We participate together in community life, ecumenical worship on special Sundays and festivals, and in serving our neighbors. Come to Christ on Sundays and you will likely encounter people worshiping in Swahili, Spanish, Korean as well as in English.
We worship on Sundays at 8am with a traditional liturgy and at 10:00am with a more blended liturgy. We offer Sunday School for children and adults at 9:00am.
Come and worship with us! Come and learn more about your faith and about God’s infinite love for all God’s people made manifest in Christ Jesus!
The first service of Christ Lutheran Church was held at Tusculum School on September 10, 1961 with 55 present. October 29, 1961, Reformation Sunday, the first service was held in the new church building with 60 present. December 3, 1961, saw the dedication of the church building and the Rev. August Wenzel was installed as the first pastor. He, along with the original charter members, watched Christ Lutheran grow in number and ministry to the point an education wing was added in 1965. Pastor Wenzel served Christ Lutheran until August 1968.
In October 1968, Pastor Vernon Bigalk became the pastor and faithfully served until August 1976. In October 1976, Pastor Michael Althauser became the third pastor of Christ Lutheran, serving until October 1992. Pastor Althauser was involved with the new construction at 299 Haywood Lane during 1990 and the merger to the ELCA in 1991. When Pastor Althauser left, we were blessed with the Rev. Ferdinand Meyer, who served on an interim basis until January 1994. Pastor Larry Richardson joined the family of Christ Lutheran Church in January 1994 serving to May 2009. In January 2009, the congregation celebrated at the mortgage burning party. We are blessed with ownership of our land and building.
After Pastor Richardson took his new call, the church was in transition led by Pastor Marie Hatcher. Currently we are blessed with the leadership of the Reverend Dr. P. Morgan Gordy who began her ministry at Christ Lutheran Church on January 16, 2011.
